Review from gillmang (BourbonEnthusiast Review ID 123)
Purchased at:A port in the Caribbean last year
Info on this bottle:Bottled in Bond, seemingly an early 1990's release judging by a '93 on the bottle base
Proof Of this Bottle:100
Nose:Rich caramel scents but medium, not heavy butterscotch-like, some light (but pleasant) congeneric elements intertwine
Taste:Rich, clean, more of the caramel, light charred background, light congener elements again which balance the richness, some ethanol. I reckon this whiskey is 5-6 years old because although no age statement is given, I have seen old ads stating that the regular Ancient Age is 6 year old whiskey. This bourbon also has a noticeable silky soft texture accentuated by adding good water, nothing gritty or spiky about it.
Finish:Not a long finish but pleasant, the whiskey offers a hearty greeting but doesn't linger..
Overall:I give this a very high rating. If I find any in Louisville on my Sampler trip (I understand bonded Ancient Age is still available) I will buy it and hope it is as good as this one. This bourbon for me showcases the merits of medium-age whiskey. The whiskey isn't swathed in too much wood tannin, smoke or other elements associated with long aging. It is all-whiskey but also smoothed down from years of storage. It has a clean pure taste of whiskey, you can see (in a good batch like the one this came from) the merits of the bonded and single barrel system.
