This one is for you, Doug and Joe and company in PA. It will take a while to complete. I suspect it will be several days work to key in this information.

See the Kentucky 1909 thread for the index key.

And I have only done 5 of the 40 pages to be typed into the database. Keep tuned as I edit the list and add more pages, but it may take a week or more to finish the state.

Before Linn sees it and goes crazy with laughter, let me point out that yes, the woman rectifier in Easton, Catherine Bercaw, is rated DD.

I am only up to the "H" cities and towns so far and the thing that has suprised me is the number of businesses that are owned by women in 1909 Pennsylvania. I wonder if the trend will keep up when I get to the big cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburg.

Mike, you may recall that I posted a circa-1900 news item some years ago about a lady who had a successful retail liquor operation, I am fairly certain it was in Pennsylvania and that John (ellenjaye) had said the location was not all that far from where he had once lived. There was mention in that story that some old rye (20 or 21 years old) had been brought back from Bremen for her inventory. I think her husband started the concern and carried it on to evident further success after he died. Maybe there was a tradition in the state of such ownership and related businesses as distilleries.

Gary,
What suprises me is that they all seem to be in Pensylvania. I don't recall any businesses in Kentucky or Maryland that were openly owned by women. It is true that some of the business with just a name and initials could be owned by women and not openly apparent that they are, but that is also true for the Pennsylvania businesses as well. The women are right out front with their names on the stores in Pennsylvania.

I wonder how the growing prohibition movement (and its strong female participation) afftected these woman owned businesses.

There may have been perhaps something in the culture of that State that favoured such open ownership (because as you suggest it surely existed elsewhere but perhaps not always patently). I wonder if Quaker philosophy may explain it with its early (as I understand) favouring of a fuller concept of social equality for women than existed elsewhere in the U.S. I can't think what else would be peculiar to that State. Recently I learned that in the plantation country of Louisiana, a tradition existed of ownership of businesses by women. I think I heard (in a guided tour of one of the old estates) that French and Spanish legal codes, before the advent of U.S. control, assisted such management but how exactly I do not know. Maybe something similar happened in Pennsylvania at the time.

Gary,
Good Point about the Quaker culture. I wonder what the Quaker view was on prohibition. Were they for or against prohibition and if so why? Maybe Joe or Doug know more on this subject and can enlighten us.

Mike,
Quakers are not forbidden to consume alcohol; however, I read that many Quakers were active in the Temperance Movement.

Doug,
Thanks for the information. I suspected that they were involved since there was a large religious factor in the movement. Still, the fact that they had more liberal attitudes towards women may be the influence that helped the women in the liquor industry operate.

My interest is essentially an historical one. i am trying to trace the involvement of the Hespenheide family of Pittsburgh, PA in the liquor/distillery business. Any references or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Doug,
I added another three pages of information - only about 25 pages more to add to the list.
