There's a lot of history and 'lore' behind bourbon so discuss both here.

Lee W Mida's Directory Merchandiser, 1934 - Kentucky

Unread postby bourbonv » Tue Dec 23, 2008 7:51 pm

I am going to add the Kentucky Distillers and Rectifiers from 1934 as listed with Mida. This reference book is not as informative as the pre-prohibition reference books, but it will at least give a list of distilleries and rectifiers that tried to come back after prohibition. I am sure there will be many that most people never heard of since they quickly went out of business.

For no particular or, it turns out, very good reason, I had assumed that Mida's reference only existed before Prohibition.

It appears though that it was revived after 1933. How long did it continue, Mike?

Who was Mida, or was that an acronym or coined trade name of some kind?

If there was a real Mida, I wonder if there are descendants of the family and if so if they continue in some branch of the distilled spirits industry. The Mida books seem an important reference to understand the industry and its products since you often refer to them.

Mida was a real person who started a trade magazine out of Chicago in the 19th century. It came back after prohibition, but I never seen a publication after the 1950's. I assume it went out of print in that decade, but I could be wrong because post prohibition magazines are harder to find thatn the pre-prohibition Mida's.

Thanks Mike. I definitely cannot download a PDF from the page Timothy indicated. It must be blocked for non-U.S. residents.

Gary,
I have a photocopy of the book Timothy found online. I did a review in the Library as well. If there is a specific section you would like, I can copy it for you. Most is fairly dated, preprohibition court decisions and how they effect the liquor industry. I will bring it along the next time I see you.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate it. I still think it would be interesting and that I could glean some taste and production notes from it (sometimes indirectly, but I've always found such references of interest). I am going to buy one of the online copies, I'll have it for "good" that way, but thanks much again. And I do intend to get down to L'ville this year, not sure when, but I will, and we will catch up with you then.

I don't know if you saw my note on the other board some time back that I saw a virtually identical bottle - full - of that 1930's-issued 18 year old (I think it was) pre-Pro Old Forester from which you kindly gave me a taste. It is behind glass in a display of historical bourbon and other bottlings at a restaurant in New Orleans, in Antoine's (the very large restaurant in the French quarter that has different rooms). The bottle was almost identical as I say but i think the whiskey was a year older. I informed the maitre 'd that I tasted from a similar bottle recently courtesy yourself and he and his staff were much impressed.

The book that Google scanned is not very interesting, although you may find it interesting as a lawyer, since it's essentially a restatement of the prevailing laws at the time, much like the books Commerce Clearing House puts out, if you're familiar with those.

The list Mike reproduced is interesting, especially the huge number of listings under Louisville. I note that a lot of the addresses are West Main Street, where there were only offices, not actual distilleries. I wonder how they distinguished distillers and rectifiers at that time. since I doubt there were ever that many actual distilleries in Louisville, either before or after Prohibition, even briefly.

There might be a parallel to the micro-distilleries of today, many of whom hang out a shingle and start promoting themselves before they've distilled the first drop.

Is it possible that a lot of these were just DBAs?

Chuck,
In the 1934 listing here, there were several that were simply DBA's (Doing Business As) companies owned by Schenley and National. In the 1909 listing they were for the most part independent companies.
