There was only one barrel of this rye whiskey bottled and it may be the bottles are spoken for and not for sale. Doug Phillips out in California had the barrel bottled with the help of a distributor or retailer in that state. You would have to contact Doug to get the details, but I would be very suprised if there are any bottles for sale.

There was only a single, non-shipping retailer in N. California that got any, and they are substantially sold, I understand -- the remainder of the barrel was subscribed privately.

I would ask Old Man Bourbon: there has been speculation that American rye whiskey originated, at least in part, with German-speakers who emigrated to the U.S. in the 1700's and were familiar with rye grain (which unlike corn is of European origin).

As a German resident who presumably is familiar with the current range of rye-based spirits there (roggen I know they are called in Holland), what do you think of this theory?

Is there any aged German rye spirits that resembles straight rye whiskey or even bourbon?

If there isn't, what about new rye spirits, if you put that in a new charred barrel for 4 years, do you think it might taste like Jim Beam rye, say?

There is still a few bottles left at the retailer, it is Ledger's Liquors in Berkeley California, talk to Ed Ledger, his number is 510-540-9243, Tuesday thru Saturday 10am to 8pm. He cannot ship due to regulations, so you will need to rely on a friend to help.

Doug,
Have you considered doing a bourbon? That would be an interesting pairing for the Willett rye.

Outstanding Rye

Unread postby libertybar » Mon Dec 24, 2007 10:12 pm

Really, that rye is the best that I have ever tasted. Really outstanding. At 139proof, it is really one of the most full-bodied whiskeys that I have ever had the pleasure of drinking.

Well done, Willett. Thank you.

True, the Willett is an exceptional Rye. My brother was shopping in D.C. the other day and of all things sitting on the merchants shelf....A bottle of Willett Bourbon. Bottle 38 of 156. I didn't know Willett did a bourbon release but evidently so. Anyone have any insight on the bourbon release?

As to how that bottle ended up in D.C. I have no idea. If interested, I'll post a pic.

Hey, ggilbertva -

Do you by chance know what store that was?

And, did you get a taste?

Don't know what store it was. I'll have to ask my brother. He also picked up 3 Thomas Handy from 2006...go figure. While not disappointed to get another Handy, I was hoping it was the 2007 since I already have 2 '06 and only 1 '07.

We did not open the Willet Bourbon....think that's probably a special occasion pour.

ggilbertva, it sounds to me like simply finding that whiskey is a special occasion?

You're right....finding it was a special occasion and we did open the bottle a couple days later. I have a lead on another bottle and hope to have that in hand early next week.
