Very Old Fitzgerald 12yr, 4/5, 100 Proof

Unread postby Rodie » Sat Apr 11, 2015 12:03 pm

My grandmother passed away and I found this old bottle of bourbon mixed in with her other spirits. Any informed comments appreciated -- I like bourbon but don't know much about it.

Yes, that was one of the top expressions from the old Stitzel-Weller distillery. Bottled around 1960 or so, it appears to still be drinkable so I suggest you do that very thing.

Before you drink it know this:
Collectors have been paying well over $1,000 for an old bottle of Very Old Fitzgerald but only if it's full and sealed.
Some people say it's some of the best bourbon ever made. An empty bottle can be sold on ebay for up to $60....

It doesn't look opened but the fill level on it seems really low.

some things are worth more than money. that its that old, intact, and was your grandmothers would make it worth more, to me, than anyone would be willing to pay. plus, its a great conversation piece.

i got into bourbon after my grandfather passed away. he retired from ND in 83, and Old Crow was his drink back then. I searched for an OC bottled in 83 or before, and a guy was nice enough on another bourbon forum to hand deliver me an 83 bottle, unopened and from across the country, for what he paid for it ($20) last year. Its still in its cardboard box. Sure, its not worth tons of money, but to me its worth tons of money, knowing he had a hand in making the contents of that bottle.

i'd keep it.
