2014 Release of 2004 Evan Williams Single Barrel

Unread postby bunghole » Wed Jun 11, 2014 7:45 pm

I have always liked Evan Williams Single Barrel since I frist tasted it in 1990 or 91. There have been plenty of lack luster years just like last year's blah bottling. Not bad, just didn't make me yell "Pants Away!".

I just picked up the new 2014 release of 2004 distilled & barreled Evan Williams bourbon.

PANTS AWAY!

{That means I think it's good}

I'm glad to hear you say that bunghole as I have one in inventory. I also had a 2003 offering but gave it to a friend that plowed out my driveway last winter. He wouldn't accept any $ so I forced it on him.

Thanks for the heads up BH. I have a bunch of 2001's and know this one quite well. If you remember how the 2001's tasted, can you tell me how the "04 compares? For the record, I thought the 2001 excellent, the 2002 pretty good, and the 2003 very close to the 2001, let's call it very good/excellent. I should also say that the '01's I am so familiar with are from a specially selected barrel for a local liquor store down where I grew up.

Cheers,

Randy, I never had any of the 2001 EWSB. I was hospitalized in early 2011 and quit drinking entirely for most if not all of that year.

I thought last years 2003 vintage to be just meh/blah. Not bad, but nothing special. I bought one bottle, and never bought another. I remember the '02 being simularly unremarkable. OK, but where's the excitement?

I certainly wish I had kept notes from 1990/2000 forward, but no. I haven't written any serious tasting notes in a very long time.

I think this years' 2004 vintage release to be one of those special years to go down in EWSB history as among the very best. At least my bottle from barrel 420 most certainly is.

I agree with Bunghole on the 2002 and the 2003 offerings. I thought the 2000 was great and the 2001 very good. I really like the 2004 and would compare it in profile to the 2000 which I think offers a little more caramel and vanilla with balanced fruit. (where I thought the 2002 and 2003 were very thin and did not offer the balance of the 2000.

I think I paid $25.00 for mine, it is bottle 234. I think I will get another one soon and open this one up sooner. My inventory levels are beginning to drop. In about 5 days I have to crack open a new one, maybe this will be it.

I'll have to try another bottle. My initial impression was that the 2004 wasn't as good as the 2003, which I thought was great.

I'm a big fan of the 2004 EWSB. Sadly I only got really into bourbon about 6 months ago, but I have 3 of these in inventory. I found a store that had some and grabbed a sample, mine are from barrel 555. It was so good I went back and grabbed 3 more because they were the same barrel. Typical good mix of vanilla, caramel, slight oak, but it has a great mix of fruity flavors that are always changing depending on the evening. Great stuff. Too bad its $30 a bottle here in Pa.

I was about to pick up a bottle the other day, having always heard great things about it, and being a fan of the standard black and white labels. When I finally found a bottle, it was 36 bucks.. I'd always heard it was available under 30. I wound up picking up a bottle of Larceny instead for ten bucks less.

I guess it depends on where you live. Prices are all over the place in different states. I see EWSB for around $25 here, but we don't even have Larceny in the state.
