Out on that dangerous limb

Unread postby Mike » Sun Feb 23, 2014 6:46 pm

I will venture out on that limb that I have often said I found no reason to go. Having many bourbons available, the one that I would prefer above all others, recognizing that I prefer no bourbon ALL the time, is Pappy Van Winkle 15 YO 107 Proof Bourbon. It has an unmatched combination of subtle flavors, both from the barrel and from the grain recipe, that offers great balance, unexcelled smoothness, and delicacy. Could I buy more, I probably would, not regardless of the cost, but with the pleasure/value vs my ability to pay in mind.

One of the advantages we have as Bourbon fans is the choice of so many styles. I favor a high rye mash bill myself such as Old Grand Dad.

I am in absolute agreement with you Mike. Pappy 15YO is THE pinnacle bourbon. I have yet to find a spirit, bourbon or otherwise, that speaks to me so fluently. It pains me to no end, the fact that I have not been able to get a single bottle these past two years. There are some readily available bourbons that come close, such as Rare Breed, but none to me, that match the overall passion of Pappy 15YO.

If you like the new stuff (which I do not) you should have tried it when it was 100% Stitzel-Weller. Now there was a great wheater.

True, SW made some of the best, but then they were the only ones making wheat mash Bourbon until Makers came along.

never had it, and due to the price and 'availability' of Pappy's, doubt I ever will.

I agree on no one bourbon fits the bill all the time, but I put Dickel 9 year in my favorite category. Sometimes though, it just doesnt fit the mood.

I have to say that to my advantage I get first crack at the Van Winkle allocation. Among many other hats I wear, I'm spirits manager at one of our stores of a family owned three store chain. In October, I assemble a list of customers who wants a bottle and prioritize it based on their yearly purchase history. When the allocation comes in, I yank one off the top for me. This year I got a 15 Pappy and a 17 Eagle Rare.

I had a 20yr home already and, while I think that's great, I prefer the 15 at 107 proof. Much more complex.

I'd say that's an enviable position to be in Roscoe.

Squire,
Yeah, great place to be. I also get first crack at the 4 Roses limited, Parker, etc, etc.

I've never had the Pappy's, but maybe someday when it becomes available here in Utah, and not have to stand in line for hours, for maybe getting a bottle of only 6 or so. I am glad though that we have Rare Breed and Old Forester Signature.
Cheers!

I hope to try it some day. But of what I have had, nothing beats the 20. I've been lucky enough to try the 23 and have had several bottles of the 20 and Lot B...and of all the bourbons I've tasted, the 20 is the best.

I would agree with Mike about the Pappy 15. I would also say that I prefer the 15 year old over the 20 year old.
