Eagle Rare 17 YO Review

Unread postby Mike » Thu Jan 19, 2006 2:07 pm

MikeK's review reminds me a lot of how I feel about Elijah Craig 18 YO. It is very smooth and a decent whiskey, but lacks depth and character.

Where MikeK mixed his ER with AAA at 50/50, I mixed my EC with Woodford Reserve at about 60/40. My blend of WR and EC improved both in my judgement. I just had a sip last night and enjoyed it.

Interesting comments... One thing I agree or notice is that Eagle Rare 17 is a non-agressive whiskey. For me it makes up in subtleties though.

I agree. Especially when its grouped with 2 barrel strength bourbons and the best rye, which is a very spicy bourbon, even at 90 proof.

then you take ER 17 which is bottled at 90 proof, and is not meant to have the bang of either the Stagg or WLW or the spicyness of the Saz.

I think the ER 17 is supposed to be, as you say, somewhat smooth and nonagressive, but within that smoothness is a very nice flavor profile, and while the flavors don't hit you like a Stagg or WLW or Saz, they are there and it's quite nice.

I'm trying to think of a comparable bourbon that is around 17 y.o. and 90 proof.....???
