That's just luck to fall into a position like that.

I have a whopping 3 bottles of bourbon in my collection:
Booker's
Four Roses Single Barrel
Jim Beam white label

I bought the Four Roses at a specialty shop where I was buying scotch, and asked the salesman for a recommendation for bourbon. I recently had the Booker's given to me as a gift through my fire hall. And I've had the JB for a while, I bought it for cooking with.

Next time I'm in the States for more than a day trip, I may do a bit of shopping

(I also have several bottles of scotch :P )

This is the state of affairs here in my house:

Evan Williams Black (3 bottles)
Evan Williams 1783
Evan Williams SB
Knob Creek
Knob Creek SB
OGD BIB
OGD 114
Wild Turkey 101
Wild Turkey RB
Buffalo Trace (3 bottles select barrel)
Jim Beam Black
Jim Beam Rye
Bulleit
Bulleit Rye
Elijah Craig 12 year
Four Roses SB (2 bottles)
Old Forester Signature (3 bottles)
Old Forester 86 proof
Bernheims Wheat
W.L. Weller special reserve
Plus an assortment of Scotch blends and a few Single malts, 2-3 Irish Whiskys and 2-3 Canadian Whiskys

I think this is a respectable collection for someone who has been taking bourbon seriously for less than a year. If I didn't add any to the collection, it could be said that I have several years worth on hand. But I'm a collector. This month I want to add a Islay single malt (probably Lophroaig 10 yr), get another bottle of Knob Creek, Bernheims (running low on both) and since OGD BIB is on sale this month at PA LCB get a few of them and a few Evan Williams Black for the bunker. I hate to admit it but I kind of like Captian Morgan Black Spiced Rum (I mix this) and while I have a few bottles of Hennesey Congnac, I really like el cheapo Paul Masson Amber Brandy better. So I'm going to put a few of those in the warehouse also.

PS If anyone is thirsty, stop on in!

Over the years my cellar has been stocked with a fairly comprehensive range, heavy on the Bourbons and Malts.

My only rule is I place absolutely no restrictions on how my guests enjoy their drink. If they want to mix Pappy with Coke I'll hand them both and continue the conversation. Friends are important, whisky is just whisky.

Friends are definitely more important than whisky...however...if someone wants a mixed drink...I have what I consider mixing whisky...that's just me...

To me...mixer covers up the flavor of cheap liquor...I'll drink Kesslers and ginger or coke without a thought....at that point the coke or ginger dominates the flavors and you are just getting the alcohol...

Just as I wouldn't make a mimosa with Dom...or make a margarita with Patron Gold...sorry...

I have no rules for what others want to do with their stuff...but for me...I have a well stocked liquor cabinet and share anything and everything...and if someone wants to enjoy the flavors the hooch has to offer...I'll try and educate them be it a bourbon or shine or whatever...but if they want a mixed drink...

I wouldn't even make a manhattan with "most" of my bourbons...but I do enjoy manhattans...but that's just me...everyone is free to do what they will with what they own...that's what makes the world great.

I would never limit anyone from drinking anything in my house...but would help guide them to the best way to enjoy what each drink/bottle has to offer...but again...that's just me...

It is interesting to me how my views on specific bourbons has changed since I started drinking them neat. As a bourbon and coke drinker, I thought 80 proof Jim Beam was total @ kicking stuff. Now, as I sip KC SB at 120 proof, I actually taste the flavor of the bourbon. Well, I guess the main thing is to enjoy whatever you are drinking no matter how you drink it. Having said that, it is probably rare that a guest would ask for a 20 year old bourbon to mix with pepsi lite.

squire, you are more generous than I.....

if Im having people over and someone wants a mixed drink, I'll point them to the HH or similar lower cost stuff, and keep them away from the Bookers, WFE, Dickel 9, etc. Same goes for the friends who shoot shots of bourbon.....if youre not tasting the intricacies of it anyway, lay off the good stuff.........on the other hand, the friends who enjoy them as they should, I'll share anything I have.

I have a fairly equal number of both types of friends though. Usually, my 'good stuff' is much higher proof than the shooters/mixers want anyway, so they lay off on their own

I have to agree...my friends know they are more than welcome to my cabinet, as I am to theirs, but I can't afford to waste good whiskey on a mixer. I've shared every one of my whiskies but my friends are all respectful and they reach for the Jack when it comes time to mixing

Thanks Squire. I'm thrilled to have found this website & forum. I'm fairly new to the bourbon scene and have only been serious about my collection for about a year. I find the 'mixer' discussion fascinating. I am of the belief that if you are in my home drinking my whiskey, you should enjoy it however you like. If you want a Blanton's & Coke, I'll mix it for you. Interestingly enough, the great Elmer T. Lee preferred his bourbon on the rocks with a splash of 7up. Cheers!
