Makers Mark 46

Unread postby RaksAbijah » Mon Jul 29, 2013 7:12 pm

I hear a bit of talk about Makers Mark on this forum, but nothing on Makers Mark 46. Would anyone care to share their experience if they've tried it? Please do not use abbreviations if you will reference other bourbons. Thanks.

I tried it and it was a little better than the regular stuff, but it's still too expensive for what it is. I'll pass, thank you.

Do you tend to like or dislike wheated bourbons?......

Makers 46 is a decent bourbon, better than the standard Makers, IMHO. I like wheated bourbons but for less money would prefer Old Weller Antique or Weller 12

This is changing the thread a little, but could you elaborate a little bit on the difference between the Weller 12 and the Weller Antique? Might help my shopping a bit, eh? I have the 46 (unopened) and would like to gather a couple of other wheated bourbons to taste with it.

Weller Antique 107 is thick, sweet and chewy. A little harsh on the finish... you could say that's understandable due to it being roughly 5-6yr old juice (or thereabouts).

Weller 12yr is thinner (understandably so at 90 proof), with much more wood/barrel flavor due to the extra aging. The two bottles I had last year were both very strong on the wood side, too bitter (for my liking). I've seen several others say that the last few years of Weller 12 haven't been up to par for what it once was.

This is why so many people enjoy a mix of the two. They cover up each other's weaknesses nicely. Weller 107 is high proof, thick and chewey, but lacks age/wood/barrel flavors/smoothness... Weller 12 is fairly low proof at 90, but has all the wood and barrel flavor you could ask for. The perfect mix. I prefer mine at 3:1 OWA to W12.... but everyone has their own preference. Most common seems to be right around 50/50.

Makers 46 is one of those things I tried just to try it. It was ok, but the French oak staves that they use to finish it, give it sort of an odd taste to me. It's like MM took some decent, but sort of bland whiskey, and added a flavor I don't expect in bourbon. I take a skeptical view of the various tricks that some use to try to make whiskey seem older than it is. I guess I prefer more traditional bourbon. I like the Wellers.

I look on Maker's 46 as a treated whisky, which doesn't mean it's bad or anything, but not worth a premium either.

I agree with the last two takes. I can't see anything special here. It would have been better to issue an older MM.

Because I generally prefer whiskies with a bit more wood than most, I like Maker's 46 much better than the regular MM, I think it is a quite good bourbon, with more complexity. Although, over the years I have come to appreciate the old MM reasonably well. But, I do not keep either on hand. When I have enough money in hand to purchase MM or MM 46, I always find something more interesting to buy for the approximately $35(?) or so.

In my opinion each of the wood enhanced bourbons; Maker's 46, Devil's Cut and Woodford Double Oaked are an improvement over their original counterparts. The problem I have is mostly with the price i.e. I won't buy Makers Mark because 46 is better, I won't buy 46 because its overpriced, therefore I choose something else entirely.

It's been awhile since I've had it, but it is a nice little bourbon, worth checking out.
Cheers!
