W.L. Weller 12 Year Old Mash Bill

Unread postby Bob Barker » Sun Jul 28, 2013 7:35 pm

I have heard it said that the wl weller 12 yo uses the same mashbill as the pappy van winkles. I do not know if this is correct but I was curious to get others opinions on the matter.

As we go forward, all the VW are or will be from Buffalo Trace. Weller SR, OWA, Weller 12, and the VWs (except the rye) start as the same. The differences are due to age, proof (amount of water added at bottling), and barrel selection. The VW brand does not have their own distillery. In the past they got whiskey from several sources. Not too long ago they made a deal with BT to supply them. Older bottles of VW could contain bourbon from one or more distilleries. If it isn't all now, at some point it should all be BT juice. This has been the cause for hysteria for some folks (not me). I gave about the shortest answer I could.

And about the best I've heard, as well.

Why the hysteria Joe? Is it because there is (for all practical purposes) no VW on store shelves. Or, is it something else?

Glad to have some clarification on this. I to have heard that same thing. I'm happy though. Here in FL we have tons of Weller, but no VW. That stuff is very hard to get here.

On the same subject here, kind of. Why does Weller 107 no longer print aged 10 years on the bottle? Didn't always used to be a 10 year?

Actually Old Weller Antique was 7 y/o, not 10.

Joe is correct, it was the Van Winkle 107 that was age stated 10 years. VW also had a 90 proof 10 year.

Oh okay, thanks for the info. I've been a big fan of the wheated bourbons. Cannot get enough of it.

Soon I'm going to venture off into Rye. Not entirely sure where to start. I'll do some searching around here, im sure that type of information has already been posted.

I just felt the need to chime in that i LOVE WHEATED BOURBONS! but more importantly its good to know that they have decreased the age on OWA 107 and still managed to maintain or honestly i think increase the quality.

I just picked up a bottle of this tonight and since the last bottle I got in october 2010 they changed the bottle, it not longer has "Since 1849" with crossed wheat stalks under it embossed in the glass. anyone else notice this?

For some reason, I think that the Weller 12 is the 'rejected" barrels of VW. Surely there are some wheated barrels made by BT that doesnt come up to Julians standards. THEN what are they going to do with all those aged wheaters? Create this brand? Maybe its the Lot B seconds?

I think the warehousemen at Buffalo Trace know exactly from which part of the warehouses to pull the barrels that match the VW flavor profile so there is little need for a selection process. If there are any reject barrels of 12-15-20 year aged whisky I expect they're sold to the NDPs.
