Wild Turkey! You done us wrong!

Unread postby Mike » Sun Jun 02, 2013 6:23 pm

The Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve bourbon is a very good ten year old bourbon. But, by me lights, it gave up too much when it went from 101 proof to 90 proof. Story was that they were running out of juice so they resorted to using the water spigot, and they did it too with the wonderful rye and their bread and butter 101.

Before me I have both the 101 RR and the 90 RR. Strangely (leastways to me), the 90 proof smells more of rye and the 101 smells more of leather and vanilla and oak. Mayhap that ain't so strange, since the 101 RR has a power more richness, sweetness, greater viscosity, and is a far more interesting bourbon.

The accountants at Wild Turkey run (and ruin) the house.

Mike I would agree with you that WT is heading in the wrong direction. They built a new distillery that can double their capacity but they don't have the warehouse space for that. If they did it would be 8 to 12 years before it made a difference.

RR is good, but I would take Kentucky Spirit and Rare Breed over it any day. :)
Cheers!

And I'd take RR over KS, but not RB.

Rare Breed is the only Wild Turkey expression (of those available to me) that currently holds my interest.

just saying.....everything is better at 100 proof and above. i know you cant get it where you are, but if you get a chance, grab an EW BIB white label. if you like EW 86, youll love EW 100

Agree with pretty much everything above. Disappointed in Wild Turkey in recent years and the new 81 tastes poorly IMO.

Agreed. Recently revisited the standard iteration 101 and it just tasted like Beam, older, deeper Beam but still Beam. Years ago the evident but not heavy handed spice set this brand apart from all others. For about the last 10 years if I drank Turkey it was 101 Rye, so I didn't notice the change. These brands are shooting themselves in the foot in spectacular fashion. Because people want so much of their product they have to change it to meet demand. Let me know how that works out.

if they drop the proof of something i like ( i only like 100+ proofers generally), i'll just stop buying it. im sure im not the only one who feels that way. enough people stop buying it, that will fix their shortage problem for them, in a way they wont like.

as highly as some guys rate some of the things on here, i just flat out wont buy anything under 90 proof, period. if people want watered down crap, they can do that at home by just adding water. the consumer cant take the water out and raise the proof to what they like. think, distillers, think!

Oh, buy the way, the only bourbon I like that is below 90-100 proof is Four Roses yellow label. It doesn't taste young.
