recommend EC barrel proof or KC 120?

Unread postby 393foureyedfox » Thu May 02, 2013 1:40 pm

These both interest me for my next experience. which do you guys recommend if you had to pick one, and why?

the Elijah Craig barrel proof at 134 proof, dont know the age....or Knob Creek at 120 proof and 9 years.

I like higher proofs, and although a newb, have really liked regular KC and Larceny....

Hey neighbor, Please let me know where to get the Elijah Craig barrel proof in Louisville. I been to all my typical spots here on the East End, can't find it. HH bourbon heritage center in Bardstown has it but at $74 for a special edition.

The Knob Creek single barrel 120 proof is great and easy to find.

The Heaven Hill Visitor Center lowered the price of the Elijah Craig 12 yr Barrel Proof to $54. I was there last week. They had at least 3 different proofs.

I have only read about the EC barrel proof. On the other hand, I can get the 120 proof KC at a local grocery store for like $32. At that price I can recommend it. I don't care for many of the other Beam brands, except for Old Grandad. I have noted differences between the different barrels of KC SB. Being single barrel, they are similar but not exactly the same.

That should be a good enough recommendation for anyone.

I tasted Knob Creek Single Barrel in Virginia. Highly Recommended.

There you have it. Buy Both. Don't quibble.

I picked up some KC 120, simply because I couldnt find any EC barrel proof.

I find it to be a "slightly" more refined OGD 114. with that small of a difference (to me, you may think it worlds apart), I dont know if its worth $36 over the $21 OGD 114....Ive tried them side-by-side multiple times with the same conclusion

when I find some ECBP, I'll gleefully buy and try it!

I drink everything just neat. I dont want it cold, and ice makes it both cold and inconsistent

btw, I was on vacation recently and tried a shot of Bookers......I have to say, I thought that the best Ive had so far!

I crossed paths with a Heaven Hills sales rep in Bardstown. He said the Elijah Craig 12 barrel proof is completely gone. Look for an 18 year old issue in August. Typical HH Employee, loves to talk bourbon with enthusiasts.

He suggested I get a bottle of Larceny in addition to my EC12 94 proof, and I said I already did and was happy with it.

Then I went over to the Heritage Bourbon House and bought a Fighting Cock ball cap. Their bourbon is a bit pricey there tho.

gone for good, or until they decide to release more?

as long as theyre releasing EC12, they COULD release EC12BP anytime they wanted.....

So I finally bought a bottle of knob creek 120 and its very disappointing. No real standout flavors and just a fairly average bourbon. I really expected better. By no means was it bad but it was just good. It was nothing special and not great just good bourbon and for a $40 bourbon there are much better values out there.

huhmmm....KC 120 is one of the few that really hit me as great from the first time i tried it, and continue to love it. it and OGD 114 are the only two that i make a point to keep around. But with the OGD 114, i went through stages with it. first i was indifferent, then disliked, then indifferent, and now its a favorite. I learned to buy a bottle, open it and leave it opened for 24 hours before taking a pour, then reseal it after every use.

I stll have never seen an ECBP anywhere. I would LOVE to find some to be able to compare it. I ended up getting the KC120 by default that way, as it was the only one of the two i could actually get my paws on. I love the warm, thick, cinnamony sweet heat of the KC120.

everyone is different. as much as i like the OGD 114, i tried the OGD BIB 100 and quickly decided i wont be buying another. same stuff, different proof, whole different taste to me.

Very true 393 about the OGD 114 and OGD bib. I'm a huge fan of ogd 114 but I just don't care for the bib version. I will be curious to see how the knob creek 120 opens up as it oxides a bit. I wanted to clarify that I am not writing it off yet its just that my initial impression was dissappointment. Eagle rare and woodford reserve are two bourbons that I find do much better when they get some oxidation going on and making each better.

well, i already really liked the KC 120........but when my local pharmacy decided to stop carrying it as it sold slowly in this part of town, and marked the whole stock of it at $18 a bottle, i bought every one of them. so, that makes me love it even more. at the regular $36-$40 price, it might not be something i KEEP on hand, but would try to at least. at this rate, i have a few years supply stashed, so i'll worry about that later
