History of mashing tools (rake and paddle)

OK, I searched an found NOTHING, NOTHING I say on the design of mashing tools, the old mash rake and mash paddle going back to the 1820's and from then on. So I'm curious about how the style began, and how it changed (or not) over time.

There's the picture of the mash rake in the Harlan Distillery pic on the new edition of Carson's Social History of Bourbon. I'll try to scan it later tonight and post a pic. There's also this design available from Williams Brewing (it's what I'm using and it's nice. Works very well)

The old French books often show drawings of all the implements of a distillery, and I'm wondering if any of the American books showed the same. And if you have pics of such equipment, please post them here.
