The price of used barrels fluctuates depending on the supply and demand. The bourbon makers tend to create a pretty steady supply, especially now with bourbon booming, so it's the demand end where it varies. Recently, the wholesale price the Scots and others have been paying in quantity is in the $70-$90 range, so if you have a chance to buy a one-off for $90, that's a pretty good price.

Give the A. Smith Bowman Distillery a call. They're in Fredericksburg, Virginia and much closer than Kentucky. Good people and a nice distillery to visit.
