The Practical Distiller

There's a lot of history and 'lore' behind bourbon so discuss both here.

The subject book written in 1809 by Samuel McHarry is currently available at http://www.gutenberg.org. It can be downloaded or read online. There is no charge. The Art of Making Whiskey by Anthony Boucherie is also available.

Boucherie is also in Early American Imprints, and it just recently got scanned in. So if you want to see images of the original, head down to your local university. You can grab it as a series of pdfs, and it's an interesting read.

If I ever have time for hobbies again (a one year old daughter has a way of taking ALL of your spare time), I plan on blogging some commentary about these old distilling texts. Close reading reveals a lot of interesting things.

Raudins intends on eventually putting out a nice paper version of Boucherie, although I haven't heard anything new from them in a while.
