History of Barton Distillery.

Barton History

1853 - Thomas Moore is born in Louisville, Kentucky (The
Origins of Barton Bourbon, Judy Dalton).

1874 - Tom Moore starts working for Willet, Franke and Company
(Origins of Barton, Dalton).

1876 - Moore and Ben Mattingly purchase the Willet and Franke
distillery in Bardstown and rename it Mattingly and
Moore Distillery. Their main brand is Belle of Nelson
bourbon (Origins of Barton, Dalton).

1879 - The Tom Moore brand is introduced (Liquor Store
Magazine, Feb.,70).

1881 - Belle of Nelson brand is "seperated" from the company
(Origins of Barton, Dalton).

1889 - Thomas Moore founded his distillery in Bardstown. He
retained ownership up to the prohibition era (Beverage
Media Blue Book, History of Barton).

1896 - Nelson County Record claims in an article about Thomas
Moore that the "distillery is one of the very best in
the country..." (Bev Med Blue Book, History).

o - The Tom Moore Distillery had a capacity of 200 bushels
per day (Origins of Barton, Dalton).

1911- Mida's Financial Index, 1911, list the Tom Moore
Distillery as "dy. No. 168, 5th Dist" with a capital
value of $150,000 to $175,000.

1917-1933 - The distillery is closed due to prohibition (Bev
Med Blue Book, History).

1933 - Oscar Getz decides to enter the liquor industry and
decides to look for a distillery (Origins of Barton,
Dalton).

o - The origin of the name "Barton" is unclear. It could
have been named for H S Barton Company of Owensboro or
a distiller in Cynthiana, Kentucky (Origins of Barton,
Dalton).

1934 - Harry A Teur purchases and modernizes the Tom Moore
Distillery (Origins of Barton, Dalton).

1944 - Oscar Getz purchases the Barton Distillery as partner
with his brother-in-law Lester Abelson. Their brands
are Tom Moore and Kentucky Gentleman (Mary Hite, Getz
Museum of Whiskey History, 27/1/93).


o - June 22, Incorporated in Deleware as Barton Distilling
Company to acquire assets of the Tom Moore Distillery
Company in Bardstown Kentucky (1966 Red Book, p.218).

1951 - Barton fill its 500,000th barrel of whiskey (Bev Med
Blue Book, History).

1957 - Barton fills its 1,000,000th barrel of whiskey (Bev Med
Blue Book, History).

o - Oscar Getz elceted Liquor Industry "Man of The Year"
(Who's Who in the Liquor Industry, 1966).

o - Oscar Getz opens his Whiskey Museum in Bardstown
(Flaget Nalley, Getz Museum).

1961 - Barton offers public stock (1966 Red Book, p.218).

1969 - Barton acquires the Glencoe distillery northwest of
Bardstown to suppliment its warehousing capacity
(History of Nelson County, Distilleries).

1971 - Barton Brands introduces "QT" whiskey; "Distilled at a
higher proof and aged in used barrels to make it
lighter." (Sports Illustrated Advertisement, 11/22/71).

1978 - Oscar Getz publishes Whiskey - An American Pictorial
History.

1982 - Oscar Getz retires (Flaget Nalley, Oscar Getz Museum).

1983 - Barton Distillery is purchased by the Scottish firm of
Argyll (World Guide to Whiskey, Jackson).

o - Oscar Getz dies (Flaget Nalley, Getz Museum).

1993 - Canandaigua acquires Barton Inc. (Kane's Beverage Week,
5/10/93).

1995 - Barton brands purchases several brands, the Owensboro
Ky. bottling plant, the Viking Distillery in Albany Ga.
from United Distillers on September 1 (Mike Veach,
9/1/95).

Can you tell me if all the original photos in Oscar's book are in the Getz Museum archives?

The largest part are, I do believe. They may have got some from outside sources, but not many, if Any.
