Based on my limited experience, it appears that rye whiskey is somewhat darker than bourbon although according to their labels their ages are similar. Is this true? If it is true, why?

Age statements can mislead you. They only identify the youngest whiskey in the bottle. The whiskey may be older than the statement claims. Also, two whiskeys of the exact same age can have matured very differently and look very different.

So does rye "age darker" than bourbon.

No.
