Just got in 2 cases of JD unaged rye. On sale at 49.99. Seems to me it's just expensive vodka.

Gotta admire the fact they can get that price for it.

Well that's what they are charging but let's see if any of the stuff actually sells. Also, found out it's 70% rye with corn and barley making up the mash bill.

No way I would pay that for any unaged whiskey. I'm sure they plan to age it, but they are trying to make a profit off of the white whiskey craze while it lasts, until the aged stuff is ready, IMO.

I wouldn't pay that much if it was aged.

I bought a bottle in Japan back in 2007 for about $19. Decent stuff for the price.

Let's see, now. We have maybe the largest whiskey distillery in America, cranking out "Tennessee" whiskey as fast as they can in order to meet world demand. Gee, folks, why not shut everything down for a week or so and make us some experimental rye whiskey instead?

That would be stupid. And Brown Forman ain't stupid.

My guess is that the rye whiskey in those bottles is as much related to "Jack Daniel" as Woodford Reserve bourbon is to the Versailles distillery of that name.

Oh wait! Isn't there now a Woodford Reserve RYE whiskey? At least in the form of a special bottling. Everyone waited on pins and needles for that one to be released (funny, there wasn't any mention of it four or five years ago when it would have been distilled). For $100 dollars(!) you got a 375ml bottle each of the Old Forester version and the Early Times version. Wonder what the REPEAT SALES were? Wonder what they did with the rest of the rye whiskey they either made or sourced?

Well, there IS that OTHER distillery down in Lynchburg (pop. 361)®...

Actually I was at Woodford about 6 years ago when they were making the rye whiskey for the experimental series, so it is all distilled at Woodford Reserve. Jack Daniels has multiple columns and doublers, so I don't see any problem with them using one for a day to make the rye, maybe even two days. The other four or five columns and doublers can still make Jack Daniels and they will not fall behind in production any more than when they shut one down for maintenance.

Distilling is no problem, just as you said. It's the re-assignment of fermenters for a week that I believe might have been a consideration. Of course, if you already HAVE a bunch of (distilled, but basically useless) rye whiskey to do something with, it still makes sense to market it as something that JD fans and collectors would trade their mothers for. :D

Remember, Jack Daniel's isn't labeled as "straight", so both versions of the Woodford Rye can be used.

P.S. - Thanks for responding. Let's keep this up!

Once again, using one fermenter for three days is probably no more trouble than what is done in maintenance. Maybe even two fermenters could be used. They do have a lot of them at Jack and they are big. I suspect that it was one fermenter for three days and still set-up for half a day to make the whiskey. I do not suspect any smoke and mirrors with the whiskey source. I do wonder why they feel they need to charge so much unless they are looking at a short term product anyway and might as make as much as the market will accept. People complain about the prices on the WR Distiller's Masterpiece collection but it sells out every time so don't expect them to lower prices anytime soon. I suspect the same theory applies to the JD rye.

Are Jack Daniels planning a high rye % aged whiskey?
