Old Verholt Straight Rye Whiskey

Unread postby twood5 » Sun Jan 22, 2012 8:26 pm

My father-in-law has a bottle of Old Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey listed as bottle # 305 at 124 proof. It's in a very chest like wooden box. It belonged to my wive's grandfather. Would anyone have any idea as to the age of this whiskey?

I might be able to get you a production date on it - I'll drop you a PM in a minute!

Sounds strange.
Also sounds, as Arte Johnson would say, "verrrrry eeenteresting".
Can you post a photo of the front and back labels?

I've seen photos of this, I believe it was sold in the 1960's and also in the late 30's as a barrel proof item.

Mr. Hurst seems familiar with the brand in this era (I mean the 60's!) and I'd be interesting in any (general) production information you might have, eg. the grist, yeast or any other details of interest. I've had the odd taste of Old Overholt from back then (never the barrel proof one) and thought it was much better than today's version. I have no real issue with today's except it never seems old enough to me, it seems to have a "green" note I find off-putting.
