Review from bourbonv (BourbonEnthusiast Review ID 104) | Purchased at: | Gift from Friend | | Info on this bottle: | This is a 2003 version of the Stagg | | Proof Of this Bottle: | 142.7 | | Nose: | Alcohol - this bourbon needs to beath a little before tasting. Oak and old leather. Caramel toffee and dark fruit - plums. Even after breathing the bourbon it keeps a strong alcohol aroma. Not a bourbon for the meek. | | Taste: | Strong alcohol burn with a dry tannic lead in. After a second you get a few of those nice caramel and fruit flavors and even a little of fine tobacco, but the alcohol makes it hard to find them. This bourbon definitely improves with a little water to tame it allowing additional flavor to through. | | Finish: | The finish is the best part of this bourbon straight. It has many wonderful hints of flavors that are there but hidden by the strong proof. The finish last a long time with some nice fruity caramel tones balanced by a dry oak taste. | | Overall: | This is the my least favorite of the Staggs so far. I was much more impressed with the lower proof version that allowed the flaqvors to come through without the alcohol killing the taste buds first. |
